President’s Message

Our first March event was a GM at the RCAF Mess on Gloucester Street. This was an evening event and our first visit there for some time. Numbers were modest but I believe those who were there enjoyed the change of venue and felt comfortable with the Air Force ambiance. We are having a second meeting on May 6th and I would encourage members to join the attendees for an enjoyable evening in comfortable surroundings.

Near the end of March we all had events to enjoy. On the 28th we attended the Anniversary of Flight and the 85th Anniversary of the RCAF banquet at 632 Legion in Orleans. As I mentioned last month we had the pleasure of the company of our Ontario Group President Sam Newman and his wife Cathy at the dinner and so many of you had an opportunity to welcome them to 410 Ottawa. On Sunday the 29th we had a Brunch at the Chimo Hotel and a chance to hear and talk to Sam about Association news. On 1st of April we had our GM and lunch at 638 Legion in Kanata.

On 3May we will be participating in the Battle of the Atlantic Ceremony at the National War memorial. On May the 6th is the Wing GM mentioned above and at that meeting our new Wing Executive will be sworn in. During the weekend of May 15th to 18th is the Ontario Group AGM at Sarnia which I and maybe one other will attend.

Our Annual BBQ will be held at Orleans Legion on Jun 3rd. I have invited our new Air Force Liaison Officer, Major Dave Sullivan from the Office of the Chief of the Air Staff to attend and be introduced. In addition we will be presenting Association year pins to many of you including a 60 year pin to Mildred Spinney- Irwin, one of our Charter members.
We wish you all a pleasant summer.

Battle of Atlantic Commemoration

Commemoration of the Battle of the Atlantic

All 410 Wing and Eastern Region Wing Members
are invited to attend the Battle of the Atlantic
Parade Sunday, May 3rd at the National War
Memorial.

Members to form up on Sparks Street (corner of Elgin) at 10:15 AM
Reception to be held afterwards in the Conference Centre across
from the Chateau Laurier Hotel. Association dress (cap and full-size
medals)

In recent years the Wing turnout on parade has been rather disappointing. The
RCAF along with the other Allied air forces played a major role in the winning of
the Battle of the Atlantic. 752 members of the RCAF died in maritime operations
as a result of enemy action and accidents in an unforgiving environment.

Special Note: May Meeting!

It has been suggested that we should hold, at least some meetings, in a more
“AirForce” locale. Also some members have problems attending meetings in
the East or in the West or in the daytime. Holding a meeting downtown in the
evening as well as noon hour meetings in the East and in the West will allow all
members to attend some meetings.

Consequently, the May meeting will take place on Wednesday, 06 May
2009 at the RCAF Officer’s Mess 158 Gloucester St. where we used to meet.
This is between Bank and O’Connor, one block south of Laurier.

The meeting will be at 7pm. There will be NO meal, repeat NO meal with the
meeting, but there may be coffee and donuts or something similiar. Parking is
available on local streets or in the Pay&Display lot just east of the Mess.
The Pay&Display lot WILL repeat WILL charge $3.00.

It is hoped that this will encourage more members to attend.
